Museum Fire May Impact Page Communications

The Page Police Department is letting the community know that the Museum fire on Mt. Elden may impact cell service throughout the Page area. Atop Mt. Elden are a number of communications towers including towers for Verizon Wireless, the main cellular service provider for the Page area.

LPNN spoke with a representative from the Page Police Department who informed us that if communication service is lost for residents and those visiting the area, the police department has prepared to station at least one officer at the Page City Hall to take reports, reports can also be placed with officers at the Police Department.

The representative did assure LPNN that the 9-1-1 system and communications for the emergency service departments would not be affected by the fire. The Department has also been working with CenturyLink, who has fiberoptics throughout the area. We were informed that the Coconino County Emergency Management Department is also closely monitoring the situation with the towers near the fire. If the fire does get too close to the towers, for safety purposes, fire managers may have to cut power to the towers, which will potentially cut most cellular and land line service for the area until power can be restored.

The museum fire started at around 11 am on Sunday, July 21 and was around 415 acres in size , and grew to an estimated 1,000 acres over night. The cause is currently under investigation.

It is estimated that approximately 200 fire personnel are working to contain the fire. Non-residential evacuation orders were announced yesterday afternoon for recreation areas within the area of the fire, and pre-evacuation notices were announced this morning for neighborhoods within the vicinity.
