Insulin Pumps Recalled Over Hacking Concerns

The FDA has issued a recall for 11 different Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps. According to the notice, the pumps being recalled have the potential to be hacked.

The recall was initiated after the FDA became aware that the affected pumps have the ability to be connected to wirelessly giving unauthorized persons access to change the pump’s insulin delivery settings which could either over-deliver insulin, under-deliver insulin, or stop the delivery of insulin.

Medtronic is unable to update the affected pumps to address the potential hacking risks. Therefore, the FDA is suggesting that “patients replace affected pumps with models that are better equipped to protect them from these risks.”

The FDA is working with Medtronic to address hacking risks including assisting patients with replacing their affected insulin pumps with newer models. To date, the FDA is not aware any patients who have been harmed by the security vulnerability. Medtronic has sent out contacted patients who they know to have purchased a recalled pump.
