Officials: Sewage Overflow Caused By Grease

Yesterday, a sewer main on Lake Powell Blvd. near the Powell Museum became partially blocked causing it to back up, causing flooding to nearby areas.

The Powell Museum was the most affected by the backup, forcing them to close early until crews could arrive to assess and fix the situation.

According to officials at Page Utility Enterprises, as soon as crews were alerted to the situation, they were able to get the line open and flowing again within less than 30 minutes.

The City's sewer main is a pipe that is 12 inches in diameter, which runs the entire length of Lake Powell Blvd., and serves most of the restaurants in the downtown area. According to officials involved, the cause of the partial blockage was due to excessive grease being dumped into the system.

Because of the flooding, the Powell Museum experienced visibly significant damage to the interior of the building, including the carpets, baseboards, and some walls.

The Powell Museum will be closed while the full extent of the damage is being assessed and cleanup efforts are undertaken. There is currently no official date as to when the museum will reopen.

Martin Stamat, Executive Director of the Glen Canyon Conservancy, the Powell Museum’s flagship store, has stated that none of the museum’s collections were damaged.

The Glen Canyon Conservancy, which is next door to the Museum, will continue to provide visitor services to the public while the restoration process takes place.
