Serious Injuries In Highway 89 Accident

Yesterday, just before 10:30 A.M., at Mile Post 35, a tour bus and a Yukon collided, seriously injuring several people.

According to officials with the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred after the driver of the Yukon signaled and began slowing, preparing to turn right on a gravel country road. Instead of turning right, the driver turned left in front of a tour bus that was in the process of passing the Yukon.

The bus t-boned the Yukon, hitting it on the driver and rear passenger side. The bus pushed the Yukon off the highway, where the Yukon began to roll multiple times.

The driver and the driver side rear passenger were both transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center by helicopter. A second passenger from the Yukon was also severely injured and was transported from the accident to Kane County Hospital where they were airlifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center as well.

No passengers on the bus sustained serious injuries. Several were treated for minor injuries before being transported to Kanab on a Kane County Bus.

Several witnesses stopped and began assisting the passengers in the Yukon before emergency services arrived, including the driver of the tour bus.

Due to the impact, the bus had come to a stop on a shoulder embankment and was tilting toward the driver’s side. According to several witness on the scene, passengers on the bus were attempting to keep the bus from tilting over by moving to the passenger side.

Emergency and tow crews had to brace the bus before passengers could be let off and

treated for injuries.
