Hill's Pet Nutrition Dog Food Recall Expanded

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is expanding its canned dog food recall due to continuing concerns of elevated vitamin D levels, adding more to a growing list of dog foods that have recently been recalled for the same reason.

The latest information from Hill’s Pet Nutrition says that canned dog food purchased between September 1, 2018 and March 21, 2019 are recalled as they may be affected. This recall does not include dry foods, cat foods, or treats.

The elevated vitamin D levels are being attributed to a manufacturer error. The affected products were distributed to stores and veterinary offices nationwide.

The FDA is still investigating the situation, and working with the manufacturer. The FDA is also requesting that veterinarians or owners who suspect vitamin D overdose in their patients and pets to report them to the FDA.

"While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss," the recall states. "When consumed at very high levels, vitamin D can in rare cases lead to potentially life threatening health issues in dogs, including renal dysfunction. Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian. In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding."
