This coming weekend is a three-day weekend for many throughout the United States. As such, you may be able to catch a rare celestial event since you may not have to work the next day.
The full moon on Sunday, January 20 will be what is called a super blood moon total eclipse. The event is estimated to start at around 8:30pm and end around midnight Arizona time. According to Earth Sky, the event will be visible from North and South America, the Arctic region, northern and western Africa, Iceland, Europe, and Greenland.
This year’s event is rare in that the total eclipse is occurring while appearing 14% bigger and 30% brighter. The next total lunar eclipse wont occur until May 2021, and total eclipses coinciding with a supermoon are very rare. According to astronomy experts there will be a total of 87 total lunar eclipses during the 21st century. Of those, only 28 will happen during a
supermoon.

Wolf Moon
The full moon in January is known as a full wolf moon, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. According to National Geographic, the name is derived from villagers who would hear hungry wolves howling due to the scarcity of food during the winter. Other names given to this moon from other cultures and tribes around the world include Old Moon, the Moon after Yule, Snow Moon, and Ice Moon.
Blood Moon
The name for blood moon comes from the reddish copper color the moon appears to be while in a total eclipse.
