FDA Recalls Dry Dog Food For Vitamin D Toxicity

The FDA has expanded its recall list of dry dog food due to high levels and potentially toxic amounts of vitamin D.

The FDA received complaints that dogs who were eating various brands of dry food were suffering from vitamin D toxicity. Scientists from the FDA tested samples of some of the products, and the results have indicated that the food tested contains upward of 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D.

According to the FDA, symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, excessive drooling, increased urination, and increased thirst. Toxic levels of vitamin D can also cause kidney failure and death.

Currently there are nine brands that are under recall, however, the FDA stated that the situation is still developing, and the list may be expanded as more information becomes available.

Those who have the recalled products should throw the product away and ensure animals and children cannot access it. Or call the company listed on the package for further instructions. If your dog has eaten the brands listed under the recall and is showing these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
