3 Major Toyota Recalls: 190,000 Vehicles Affected

Toyota has announced three vehicle recalls since yesterday.

Recall One

In the first recall, which was announced yesterday, Toyota stated that it was speeding up a recall to replace Takata airbag inflators, which after deployment, can cause the metal canister to break apart, shooting metal shrapnel throughout the vehicle.

The recall was originally scheduled to begin in December of 2019, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s schedule. The recall covers approximately 60,000 vehicles: the 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla, 2002-2005 Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2005 Toyota Tundra, and 2002-2005 Lexus SC.

Each of these vehicles were previously recalled due faulty Takata airbag inflators and were replaced with functioning Takata parts. This latest recall will replace the newer parts with inflators from non-Takata suppliers.

According to USA Today, there have been 23 deaths worldwide related to the devices.

Owners will receive notifications via first-class mail starting in early January.

This recall is the latest in what is the largest in U.S. history, affecting nearly all major auto manufacturers and nearly 37 million vehicles.

Recall Two

This recall spans 12 model years and affects roughly 89,000 vehicles. The recall affects 2008-2019 Toyota Land Cruisers and 2008-2019 Lexus LX 570.

The reason for the recall is due to a seatbelt tension sensor that may malfunction causing airbag warning lights to turn on. Additionally, it has the potential to deactivate the front passenger airbag, the knee airbag, and the passenger side airbag.

Toyota has stated that they are currently working on a remedy for the problem, as there is not one just yet.

According to the company, owners of affected vehicles should begin receiving notifications through first-class mail by mid-February, 2019.

Recall Three

This recall encompasses approximately 44,000 2018-2019 Tacoma midsized pickup trucks.

This recall is due to a seal in the master cylinder and an “improper manufacturing process by a part supplier”. The seal in the master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak which can cause reduced braking performance, and greater stopping distances, and can increase the risk of accidents.

Toyota will be sending owners notifications by late January 2019. When taking the vehicle in for the recall, the entire brake master cylinder will be replaced with an updated one.
