Several agencies throughout Northern Arizona and Southern Utah are selling Christmas tree cutting permits. The areas for the permits, their cost, and number of permits allowed are dependent upon the area your permit is good for. To continue or create a family tradition of hunting, finding, and cutting down your family's perfect Christmas tree, the following agencies and locations are selling permits this year.
NORTHERN ARIZONA CHRISTMAS TREE PERMITS
Coconino National Forest
Coconino National Forest is selling only 1,100 permits this year. Each permit is good for cutting in designated areas of the Flagstaff and Mogollon Rim ranger districts until Dec. 24. The permits are on a first-come-first serve basis and are issued one per household, so you may want to get yours soon; last year, they ran out of permits within the first week. The permits are $15 each, and can be paid for by cash, credit, or personal check.
This year, the Flagstaff Ranger Station will be selling 200 permits for Pinyon and Juniper trees within two designated Christmas tree cutting areas in the Flagstaff Ranger District, and 300 permits for Fir, Pinyon Pine, or Ponderosa Pine trees within designated areas of the Mogollon Rim Ranger District. A map will be provided with each permit, as well as the stipulations and limitations regarding the size of tree that can be cut.
The Mogollon Rim Ranger Station will have 600 permits for sale for areas within the Mogollon Rim Ranger District, which includes Fir, Pinyon Pine, and Ponderosa Pine trees in designated areas located approximately 1 to 2.5 hours south of Flagstaff.
Permits will not be sold at the Forest Supervisor’s Office. The Mogollon Rim Ranger Station and the Flagstaff Ranger Station are open Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. To see more information and maps for the different areas, click here.
Kaibab National Forest
The Kaibab National Forest will sell over-the-counter and through-the-mail Christmas tree tags for each of its three ranger districts beginning today in order to allow members of the public to enjoy the popular holiday tradition of cutting one’s own tree. 1,800 tags are available, however, the district believes this amount should be sufficient supply to meet demand.
Permits are $15 and will allow the holder to cut a tree of any species that is not more than 10 feet in height within a designated area on the Kaibab National Forest from Nov. 16 through Dec. 24. The tag is only good for a tree on the ranger district from which it was purchased and can’t be used to cut a tree on a different district unless specifically noted. No refunds will be made, even if weather conditions prevent access to cutting areas.Individuals who purchase tags will be provided with a map showing their designated cutting area along with additional tree cutting instructions. The number of available tags and tree species, locations and hours for purchasing the permits, and contact information for each ranger district are as follows:
