Pet Food Recall: Toxic Levels Of Vitamin D

Nutrisca of Saint Louis, Missouri, is voluntarily recalling on type of its dry dog food due to the product containing high levels of Vitamin D. According to the FDA, Nutrisca became aware of the problem after receiving complaints from three pet owners, and an investigation revealed that a formulation error led to the elevated vitamin D in the product.

What Should Owners Do?

The FDA is suggesting that pet owners stop feeding their pet the food under recall, and either dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

According to the recall notice, these are the only Nutrisca products that are under recall, other products are safe to feed pets.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Toxicity

Dogs who have consumed high levels of vitamin D may show the following symptoms, according to the recall notice:

• Loss of appetite

• Vomiting

• Increased thirst

• Increased urination

• Excessive drooling

• Weight loss

The consumption of very high levels of vitamin D can lead to health issues such as renal dysfunction.
