GISHWHES Comes to Page You may be asking yourself, “What on earth is GISHWHES?” It stands for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. GISHWHES was unofficially started in 2010 by Supernatural actor Misha Collins. Collins, who plays the angel Castiel on the show, was asked by a publicist to help Supernatural gain enough traction to climb from second place to first place in the People’s Choice Awards voting. Collins took to Twitter and declared to his fans that if they could make Supernatural win, he would get a rhinoceros that he would share with everyone who helped by voting for the show. When Supernatural did, in fact, win the People’s Choice Awards that year, Collins followed through on his promise in an unexpected and unique way: He wrote scavenger hunt challenges on the backs of jigsaw puzzle pieces that, when put together, formed a picture of a rhino. He mailed the puzzle pieces to Twitter followers who sent a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and soon, his fans began to respond with photos of themselves completing the off-the-wall requests. Collins enjoyed this interaction with his followers so much that he created an official scavenger hunt in 2011, dubbing it the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. The hunt has taken place every year since then, and has grown exponentially each year; breaking multiple Guinness World Records in the process. People participate in GISHWHES by forming teams of 15 members, and receiving a list of various challenges. Each challenge has a point value assigned to it, and teams take photos or videos of themselves completing the challenges and submit them. At the end of GISHWHES, which is exactly 1 week long, the team with the most points wins an all-expense paid trip to somewhere with Collins. Past challenges have ranged from the creative (Create a cocktail dress or tux out of flowers) to the heart-warming (Find a local school art program that needs instruments, art supplies, etc. and donate a needed item to it) to the downright absurd (Find someone you love and butter them up; literally, cover them in butter and then give them a big hug). Random acts of kindness are a recurring theme in the GISHWHES challenge list, and it is clear that raising awareness for causes and contributing to charity are an important part of the entire process. This year, GISHWHES has reached our own community in the form of the Scheme Team; a

team from the Page area who will be competing in GISHWHES for the very first time. The team is headed by local Page resident Becca Shepherd, who learned about GISHWHES earlier this year and felt like it would be too much fun to pass up. As GISHWHES draws nearer, the Scheme Team is getting geared up and excited to see what this year’s challenge list may hold. This year’s GISHWHES will take place August 5th – 12th, so if you are out and about in Page during that week and see some wacky shenanigans going on, it’s a safe bet you’re seeing the Scheme Team in all of their mischievous glory. Cheer them on, say hey, or even ask if they might need an extra hand to help with whatever task they are completing!
